- H.P. Lovecraft Lore in the Sabrina Archie Comics
Season 3: Hell, or Earth?
Remembering Season 3, the devilishly fun, campy series ultimately did away with its singular approach to navigating Sabrina’s magical teenage dilemmas. Showrunner and Archie Comics Chief Creative Officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa decided this season to traverse Sabrina’s growing conflict between the light and the night. While also shattering both sides to amplify her predicament furthermore and thus, the stakes of the show. We saw Sabrina’s enemies grow, her coven reduced significantly, father Satan was trapped inside her boyfriend Nick, and Lilith ruled Hell. Therefore, resulting in Sabrina working hard to bring back her boyfriend and restore her life as it once was.
Time Paradox: Two Sabrina’s
But there’s more. New threats arise with the arrival of the Pagans and budding ruler of Hell, Caliban, prove too much for Sabrina, and even time itself snaps. We are then thrust into the convoluted, paradoxical time-travel plot ending with the teen witch creating another timeline where two Sabrina’s co-exist.
Taking her place both as Queen of Hell and living a semi-normal life with magic as a teenager. After two seasons of going back and forth about whether she would ascend as Queen of Hell or live out a pretty normal life in Greendale, Sabrina finally chooses both. However, Ambrose tells Sabrina’s past self that there can be dire consequences for messing with time. It proved in this season that Hell without its legitimate ruler nearly brought the world to an end. Still, a new problem has been created with the severing of the time loop—which may put an end to time and reality either way.
How Blackwood’s Unleashing of The Eldritch Terrors Will Manifest in Season 4
Season 3’s eerie last few frames of Father Blackwood immediately revealed the direct consequences of Sabrina’s time-travel paradox, which also established season 4’s critical conflict. More specifically, the eldritch terrors. So, focused on fighting for the throne of Hell and saving the world in her re-do, the time egg was left unguarded and ripe for Father Blackwood to take and unleash in the middle of the Greendale forest. We hear him call upon the eldritch terrors and for the egg to break through the “skin of reality.” A loud shriek breaks through and echoes an overwhelming power that brings Blackwood and his children to their knees. The warlock then utters how they have birthed the beginning of the end.
So, as stated in an interview, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa gives more details into what we can expect from the terrors and Blackwood. He says, “each episode [of Season 4] has a Big Bad that represents this primal terror, this primal fear. We see Blackwood ascend a little bit more again to the level he was around Season 1 as a threat because of what he’s unleashed.” Imagine this all immersed into the aesthetic of H.P. Lovecraft and turned loose on Greendale. Leaving everything to become “a battleground for this really epic battle between evil and good and horror and sanity,” the showrunner said. With this new level of darkness teased, it may demand the power of two Sabrina’s like teased in the trailer.
H.P. Lovecraft Lore in the Sabrina Archie Comics
Nevertheless, not unique to Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, eldritch is an archaic word popularized by horror pioneer and author H.P. Lovecraft. Lovecraft often wrote about eldritch entities and creatures in his stories, like in the book Eldritch Tales. His most famous creation is the eldritch Cthulhu—most recently seen in Lovecraft Country’s pilot episode and Yog-Sothoth, Azathoth, a monster bat, and The Hound.
Moreover, the word is usually used to describe something weird and terrifying while also possessing the power to alter reality. Sabrina so happens to have similar occurrences throughout the Netflix show and so far, more specifically the comics. The best example is found in the Afterlife With Archie horror series when Sabrina encounters Cthulhu and other monsters after being thrown into a mental institution run by a Dr. H.P. Lovecraft.
Paying homage to the famous horror author, our favorite teenage witch experiences several scary adventures, visions, and dream sequences where she even becomes the bride of Cthulhu. Now knowing all of this and considering the showrunner saying, “each episode of Part 4 is like its own mini horror movie,” Sabrina’s adventures are set to be the most chilling yet.
